Preserving History

Norwegian Rosemaling is a decorative form of painting dating back to the 16th century in Norway.  This very old form of painted decoration varied in design and color by region.  One that is versed in the historical styles can not only recognize the artist, but the time and location where that painting was created.

Norwegian Rosemaling was based on the acanthus scroll baroque which dates all the way back to the 6th century B.C. Greece.  The acanthus has been the traditional line of movement for many design styles.  You can see examples of acanthus in painting and architecture around the world.  This use needs to be understood and preserved.

During the height of the Norwegian Rosemaling painting period there were over 110 region styles.  Many taking influence and inspiration from Europe.  Today we have catalog, recreated and preseved over 40 of those styles for the education and inspiration of future artists.
